About

Founding and Senior Manager of the MediaLab at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Don Undeen is currently an independent consultant based in Washington DC, and involved in a range of initiatives that connect the vision of the arts to the practical needs of business and social entrepreneurship.

Founding and Senior Manager of the MediaLab at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. In 2012 Don Undeen was tasked with establishing a space for experimentation at the intersection of art, technology, and the museum experience. By working closely with NYC's creative technology community, the MediaLab developed a worldwide reputation for consistently delivering provocative, exciting, and valuable projects.

Don is currently an independent consultant based in Washington DC, and involved in a range of initiatives that connect the vision of the arts to the practical needs of business and social entrepreneurship. A background in hard computer science combined with an enthusiasm for communication and creativity make Don a unique asset to culture/tech organizations. He serves on the board of advisors for New Media consultancy Hyphen Hub, which connects new media artists to the technology industry. He is the chair of the Vatican Art & Technology Council's "Creative Lab" Committee, which is building an innovation space devoted to the message of Pope Francis. As a Visiting Researcher at Georgetown University, Don is studying new business models that leverage open cultural data. He also serves as an expert advisor to the European Erasmus+ funded "Creative Museum" project, which connects museums with maker communities throughout Europe. Through frequent international travel, speaking engagements, and workshops, Don continues to bring together cultural experts and technologists to explore new connections between collections and electrons.

Projects
Creative Museum The Creative Museum Project seeks to explore and inform the connections between our cultural organisations and their communities by capitalising on the emergence of new and democratising digital technologies. I'm helping to produce a series of "Maker Residencies" at 6 different European partner institutions, through 2017.
Vatican Arts and Technology Council The VATC is dedicated to exploring ways that Art and Technology can help to promote and enact universal human values to people in need around the world.
Electric Objects A Computer Made for Art. Electic Objects is a Digital Art platform, with a mission to put digital art on a wall in every home. I'm experimenting with ways that museum Open Data and Media can contribute to this mission.
C5 Creative Coding, Cultural Commons, Community. C5 is a web-based environment for collaborative live coding in interaction with open data and media from cultural institutions. It is designed to make creative remixing of museum APIs fast, fun, and sharable. Beta release coming soon, stay tuned!
Georgetown Old North Pilgrimage Project "The Pilgrimage Project" is a multi-disciplinary collaborative ITEL experiment rediscovering the spaces of Georgetown's campus. Our first focus is Old North, Georgetown's oldest standing building.
